ASTRAKHAN STATE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY DEVELOPS FISH FEED WITH PROTEIN OF MICROBIAL ORIGIN
8 December 2025 |
Fish feed based on gaprin, a protein of microbial origin, was developed in Astrakhan University, according to the Federal Agency for Fishery. The project won a grant of the Russian Science Foundation. The new feeds are intended for the valuable objects of aquaculture: acipenserids, cyprinids, Australian crayfish, and freshwater prawn. Modern gaprin is produced using natural gas (methane) by means of methane-oxidizing bacteria. Resulting biomass is 60-70% protein. At the same time, methanotrophic microorganisms grow 500 times faster than the highest-yielding agricultural crops. One can “adjust” the composition of the protein like a construction kit – select the optimal balance of amino acids and other nutrients for every type of fish. It will have a positive effect on its growth, development, and reduce the risk of diseases.
