KABARDINO-BALKARIAN REPUBLIC INTRODUCES MUTTON IN THE WORLD MARKET

There has been a consistent trend for the growth of sheep and goats population in Kabardino-Balkaria over the last years, especially in private households and peasant farm enterprises. The number of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs effectively using the resource potential of the lands of distant pasture animal husbandry increased significantly on the territory of the republic. In 2025, 419,000 tonnes of mutton were produced in Russia in live weight. Moreover, the share of private households and peasant farm enterprises has exceeded 90% in the total production volume. Meat sheep breeding is concentrated in two federal districts – North Caucasian and Southern Districts. About two thirds of mutton are delivered from Dagestan, Stavropol Territory, Kalmykia, and Kabardino-Balkaria. Industrial sector has increased mutton production by 5.7% over the last 10 years, whereas peasant farm enterprises have done by 32.3%. Iran is beginning to buy mutton from the peasant farms of Kabardino-Balkaria in large volumes.
