RUSSIA CREATING NEW CULTIVARS OF SMALL FRUIT CROPS AND EXPANDING PLANTATIONS

According to the Federal State Statistics Service, the yield of berries reached 751,000 tonnes in 2025, up 20% on the previous year. The development of the Russian berry growing sector is largely contributed to by the creation of domestic selection developments adapted to climatic changes. 100 new domestically bred cultivars of popular crops have been included into the State Register over the past five years, such as raspberry, garden strawberry, currant, bog bilberry, etc. These cultivars are adapted to different climatic zones of the country, from the Central Region to Western Siberia and Ural, and are distinguished by high crop yield, better taste, good winter hardiness, and drought resistance. One example is new domestic cultivars of black currant with higher content of Vitamin C. Greenhouse growing of small fruit is on the rise in Russia. In particular, the first raspberries of this season were harvested on the basis of the innovative greenhouses of Timiryazev Academy.
