RUSSIA TURNS OUT TO BE NUMBER FIVE IN THE GLOBAL POTATO PRODUCTION VOLUME

According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization, at yearend 2024, Russia took fifth place in the global potato production volume. Every twentieth tonne of potatoes grown in the world was Russian – totally, 18.4 million tonnes were harvested in our country, which is 4.7% of the global volume. China remains the absolute leader of the world ranking with the figure of 94.8 million tonnes (24% of the global production). India which has grown 57.1 million tonnes is the second. Ukraine (21.1 million tonnes), USA (19.1 million tonnes), and Russia round out the top five. Belarus is number 23 with the production volume of 3.1 million tonnes. Interestingly, the structure of the world potatoes exports looks different. The biggest exporters are European countries: France, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Egypt.
