SAIGA SHOOTING MAY BE ALLOWED IN SARATOV REGION

Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has offered to exclude the Volga-Urals population of saigas from the Red Book. This will allow controlling their number, including the possibility of shooting. The reason is the mass migration of the animals from Kazakhstan causing a significant damage to the agriculture of Saratov Region. About1 million saigas were found here in 2025. According to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the animals are trampling the crops, causing damage to infrastructure at the border, and may be the carriers of foot-and-mouse disease, anthrax, brucellosis, and other diseases. Thousands of hectares of spring crops have been affected in the region – chickpea, wheat, safflower, and lentil. According to the draft order, only the northwestern Caspian population of saigas (Kalmykia, Astrakhan Region) may remain in the Red Book.
