SARATOV REGION PLANNING TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF MUTTON AND SHEEP WOOL

In 2025, 5.4 thousand tonnes of mutton were produced in Saratov Region for slaughter in live weight. The sheep raisers of the region also produced 450 tonnes of wool last year. Average meat yield is 42% per sheep at the farms of Saratov Region. The annual amount of wool shorn is estimated at 2.8 kilograms. Saratov’s sheep raisers are expected to grow about 15 thousand tonnes of sheep and goats in live weight for slaughter and 500 tonnes of wool in 2026. Currently, about 200 farms and people’s private households are producing mutton in Saratov Region. There were 410 thousand small ruminants as at the beginning of 2026 in the region. The main breeds of sheep bred in the region are the Stavropol, Volgograd, Caucasian, Tsigai, Kuibyshev ones. By the way, an investment project on the construction of a sheep farm for 5 thousand animals is being implemented today in Saratov Region, and 65 tonnes of meat is are planned to be produced at the farm per year.
