SCIENTISTS OFFER AN ALTERNATIVE TO PHOTOSYNTHESIS FOR PLANT GROWING

Despite its fundamental role in life support, photosynthesis is distinguished by low efficiency and allows assimilating only about 1% of the solar energy absorbed. The researchers of the Universities of California and Washington have offered an innovative technology of food production – electro-agriculture. This method replaces traditional photosynthesis by a chemical process with the use of solar energy for the direct conversion of carbon dioxide to organic compounds which serve as food for plants. Scientists estimate that the widespread implementation of electro-agriculture might result in the reduction of lands needed for agriculture by almost 94% and open prospects for producing food in space.
