MOST OF ALTAI HONEY NOT FROM ALTAI

In Russia, 95% of the so-called “Altai honey” is produced outside of Altai Territory. Research showed that Altai honey was produced by 348 companies in 58 regions. A similar picture is with another popular product – Adyghe cheese. Under the terms for registering a geographical indication, the cheese must be produced in Adygea from milk obtained supposedly “from the foothills of Greater Caucasus”. However, Rosselkhoznadzor’s information systems showed that this dairy product is produced by 218 companies, also in 58 regions. In Adygea itself, the cheese is made only by 26 producers. Producers must gain major economic benefit from geographical indications, otherwise this may become the ground for the falsification of products.
