RUSSIA MAY INCREASE SUGAR PRODUCTION IN THE NEW SEASON

6.2 mln tons of sugar were produced in the country during the season of 2022/2023. According to the forecasts of the lead expert of the Institute for Agricultural market studies (IKAR) Yevgeny Ivanov, production during the season of 2023/2024 can exceed 6.5 mln tons taking into account the extension of area under sugar beet and favourable conditions.
“Yearly sugar consumption in Russia is around 5.8–5.9 mln tons, import is about 200 thousand tons, “odd” (higher than a year before) carry-over stocks are now also 200 thousand tons. Thus, we will have to export or send everything that we will produce over 5.4–5.5 mln tons to the intervention stock”, Yevgeny Ivanov told to Pole.RF.
Indicatively, Russia exported 335 thousand tons of sugar last season which is 5.7% more than in the previous season. The key importers of Russian sugar are Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as well as other former USSR countries and Mongolia.
