RUSSIA UPDATES THE STATE STANDARD FOR ETHYL ALCOHOL

The Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) adopted a new GOST, the first one over 11 years, which regulates the requirements to ethyl alcohol. It is specified that the new federal standard applies to the manufacturing of the product from different grain crops. The following is introduced into the GOST: the definition of ethyl alcohol, its differentiation into two classifications, and the list of used raw materials is also augmented. Now this term will be used to denote a colorless highly flammable liquid, the flash point of which must be at least 13 degrees, and autoignition temperature must be at least 404 degrees. The product is divided into two categories depending on the grains used – the Classic and Ultra ones. For the first category, it must be produced from wheat, rye, or their mix, and the share of ethyl alcohol must be at least 96%. In the second category, the list of grains must also include barley, spelt, and emmer in different proportions, and the minimum share of ethyl alcohol must be a little higher, at least 96.3%. The new state standard is to enter into force as early as on 15 April this year.
