SAIGAS CAUSING DAMAGE TO SARATOV REGION

Serious damage is being caused to agricultural crops by the mass spread of saigas in Saratov Region. The artiodactyls migrated into the region from Kazakhstan at the end of May. Currently, about a million animals have already been found in the local fields. They trample and eat sown crops. They have also caused damage to the environmental condition of the Maly Uzen river where hundreds of these animals were drowned. One more problem is that saigas are listed in the Red Books of Russia and Kazakhstan. It means that it is not possible to get rid of them by hunting or regulating their population. Special commissions are being formed to estimate the damage caused by the migration of the animals. A mechanism for helping affected farmers is being worked out. It is planned to discuss the problem at the federal level.
