TOMATO GREENHOUSE TO RUN ON WASTE HEATING IN EUROPE
11 June 2025 |
A project on simultaneous vegetable growing and waste control is being implemented in the UK. It is planned to build a greenhouse near a waste recycling plant in 2027. 30 000 tonnes of tomatoes will be produced annually, heating the greenhouse by burning household waste. Household waste will be burned on site and produce steam. A part of this steam will activate turbines to generate electricity and supply the greenhouse with electrical power. The rest of the steam will heat the greenhouse at a constant temperature all the year round. This will become the largest waste-heated low carbon greenhouse complex in Europe. It will also reduce the region’s dependence on waste deposits. Besides, the project is of an import substituting nature due to the increase of yield.
